Scientists Discover Biggest Star To Date

R136a1, no that’s not a typo error, but the name of the recently discovered star by scientists which according to them is the biggest on record to date.

Scientists say that it’s not only the biggest but may also be the heaviest, measuring to almost 320 solar masses. Moreover, astrophysicist Paul Crowther says that it used to be much bigger for the star seems to be already in its last stages of its life.

The massive star is currently shining 10 million times the luminosity of our sun, that’s why it’s only been discovered now – and an indication that it’s already burning itself off.

Crowther further says R136a1 is in the center of a star cluster in the Tarantula Nebula, a sprawling cloud of gas and dust in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy about 165,000 light-years away from our own Milky Way.
